This Halloween, our costumes were based on Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire. We both loved this film as kids, and when we started dating, it was one of the first movies we watched together. My husband was Milo Thatch and I was Helga Sinclair. Our hair looked pretty awesome until we stepped outdoors, when it was blown to pieces in two seconds flat - especially mine! (I'm going to remember to use lots of hairspray, whatever we do next year)!

Our costumes were sourced from things we already had, as well as thrifted items. My husband wore a pair of my old prescription glasses after I carefully removed the lenses. His vest was a thrifted jacket with the arms cut off. I got a pretty sweet black turtleneck sweater out of this thrifting adventure, which I'll definitely wear again. Some of our pieces - his bow tie, vest, and my jacket and gloves -were dyed the correct color. Our local grocery store had their Rit dye on closeout a few weeks ago, so I went a little crazy.

We decided the Shepherd's Journal was an essential prop. It took a few days to make, but it wasn't too difficult. It wasn't entirely accurate either, but there comes a point when you say "This is good enough for Halloween." It was made from cardboard, duct tape, painted fabric scraps, felt and polymer clay.

We spent Halloween weekend traveling and visiting a good friend in Virginia, and a good time was had by all. Otherwise, it was pretty quiet. How about yours? Feel free to share your Halloween links in the comments. I'd love to see your costumes!

  1. Not familiar with this film, but it's a good look on you -- I like how your lipstick matches his bow tie! And you have to love a classic black ribbed turtleneck -- I still wear one I bought half a lifetime ago...

(I didn't exactly dress up for Halloween, but I did a Halloween post here: http://mondoagogo.wordpress.com/2014/10/31/witch-feathers-and-locket-bones/ )

  9. Your costumes look awesome! I remember really liking Atlantis when I was a kid, but I haven't seen it in ages. I'll have to make a point to watch it sometime soon. I love that you pulled your costumes from your closet. I think that's really the best way to do things, storebought ones are never as fun.
