We're dreaming of a road trip this summer - the longest one my husband and I have ever planned. Before we were married, we traveled to Memphis for a business trip and to northern Virginia for job-hunting. Since we've been married we've taken two trips to the coast of South Carolina and one to the coast of North Carolina. Now, we're thinking of traveling west this summer. If you have any road trip tips, I'd love to see them in the comments, because this is new territory for me. It's part of what makes it so exciting, though. We're after new experiences this summer.
However, I've recently been thinking of old experiences. I rediscovered my childhood rock collection. My mother held on to it. It was a jumbled mess. Nothing was labeled, and I couldn't help but wonder why half of the rocks look like they came from somebody's gravel driveway. But I've been taking some of the more interesting stones and using them still-life subjects. The amethysts(?) are my favorites.
Vintage nat'l geo maps and old rock collections...perfection.
ReplyDeleteAs for road trips, of which i love, my biggest suggestion is skip the interstates. They're wonderful if you need to get somewhere fast, but if you're looking for america, she's been bypassed by them.
Oh i'm excited for you!
Neat suggestion! We'll probably have to take some interstates to get to AZ (I think our first big stop will be the Grand Canyon) but once we're out there I hope to take some scenic routes. :-)
DeleteRoadtrips- I live in the land of! Seriously though- a roadtrip going to Mt. Rushmore, stopping off at Devil's Tower and then heading to Cody (which, okay, is my hometown, but really is the best entrance to Yellowstone) before doing to Yellowstone Park. You can exit Yellowstone Park after a few days and go down through Teton Park and Jackson Hole. You could then drive down to the Grand Canyon from there, possibly stopping off through the Arches Park in Utah.
ReplyDeleteOh,that sounds like a dream trip! I was initially thinking of Yellowstone and Jackson and Cody and Rushmore, ect. I went on a trip like that with my parents years ago and it was amazing. You live in some beautiful country. I think because of time we're going to have to stick mostly to the South West, though. Grand Canyon, Monument Valley - we'll see. Someday I definitely want to go to Yellowstone again.
DeleteIf you're in the market for European road trip suggestions I could certainly help - particularly in Ireland or Scotland :) As for America, I did one road trip with my husband around Florida up to North Carolina then across to Mississippi and back to Flordia all in the space of two weeks. So my main tip from that would be that less is more - we spent waaay too much time driving so don't try to cover too much ground. Interstates are boring! And this website http://www.roadsideamerica.com/ is great for finding quirky roadside attractions along the way! Looking forward to hearing more about your trip :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the website - I'll definitely take a look at that. I've made the trip from North Carolina to Louisiana and back and I'll agree it's long and boring - especially driving across Alabama and Mississippi. I think you're absolutely right about less is more. That was a lot of mileage you covered in two weeks!
DeleteAn Ireland Scotland road trip would be incredible! Someday, maybe. :-) Thanks for the tips!
How far west are you planning on going? I could definitely send you a list of places to visit in Arizona, Utah, and California :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think Arizona and Utah are as far as we're going. I'd love to go to California someday, though.
