California condor #23We woke early on our second day at Grand Canyon National Park to catch the sunrise at Mather Point. Because of the 3-hour time difference (time zones, plus Arizona doesn't observe daylight savings) we didn't have much trouble getting up before 5:00 in the morning.

We saw plenty of sassy ravens and rock squirrels. They didn't seem to be afraid of humans at all. There were several signs at the park warning visitors not to feed the rock squirrels - they bite and can spread plague!

After listening to a ranger talk about the California condor Restoration Project, like magic, two wild condors flew overhead. It was an incredible coincidence. I got a blown-out shot of California condor #23 (right). If you look closely you can see the tags on his wings. I looked him up online and it turns out he's a pretty special bird. California condors are critically endangered and almost went extinct in the last century.

After saying goodbye to Grand Canyon National Park, we were on our way towards Utah and Colorado.
