The other day was the anniversary of our engagement. We had both forgotten about it, but we happened to have planned a nice picnic date by coincidence. We grabbed some sandwiches from a sub shop, brought along a melon, and drove up into the mountains to the Blowing Rock area to catch the sunset. The melon was a "Santa Claus" - one we had never tried before. We didn't have time to eat it on our picnic, however, because we were running late and the sun was sinking. (We ate it the next day - it was similar to honeydew).

We hurried up Flat Top Mountain at Moses Cone Memorial Park to the old firetower. Just in time we caught the sunset. Our 2.8-mile hike down was in the dark, of course, and far more spooky than I anticipated. The Cones are actually burried off of this trail in a pine grove, but that sort of thing doesn't bother me. I was afraid of rounding a corner and seeing a big black bear. Fortunatly, we only encounted small creatures - rabbits and toads. It was a beautiful evening, and the best unintintional anniversary date we ever had.

  2. These are lovely photos. I agree with Abigail above, you are lucky to have these so close to you, this trail seems so picture perfect!
And I've done the same thing a few times, realized that cute dates coincide with an important date from the past.

    1. Hehe, it was a few days later my husband remembered. I'm just that oblivious! :-D It did give us the warm-fuzzies, though. :-)
