The butterfly in the first photo is a Great Spangled Fritillary, and the one in the photo directly above is an Eastern Swallowtail. So far, I haven't spotted nearly as many butterflies as I did last August, but I'm very glad to have seen these. I think the sunny goldenrod and the other yellow wildflowers of August and September really cheer up a landscape. Our wonderful five-mile hike yesterday was a reminder of how beautiful late summer can be.
