August is one of my favorite months. It's still summer, but less busy than June and July, and there are exciting things to look forward to, like cooler weather and falling leaves. I've enjoyed chasing down and shooting flowers all summer - it's taught me a great deal about my camera. I started off using my point-and-shoot (up until the 6th photo), and then switched to my DSLR exclusively. These are some of my August favorites, presented here in chronological order starting on August 3, and ending yesterday.

Have you been learning anything new and fun this month?

Also, there's still plenty of time to submit your art, writing, comics and photography to Walk With Me Through Autumn, Vol. II. I'd love to hear from you. Also, if you have an idea for a submission, but can't get it in before September 5, I'd still love to hear it.

So far, I haven't spotted nearly as many butterflies as I did last August, but I'm very glad to have seen these. I think the sunny goldenrod and the other yellow wildflowers of August and September really cheer up a landscape. Our wonderful five-mile hike yesterday was a reminder of how beautiful late summer can be.

I hope you all have a wonderful Friday and weekend!

Summer on Film

Here are some 35mm snaps from our time this summer. I used a disposable Kodak camera with 800 ISO film. Cornfields, lighthouses, beaches and mountains - I feel that this humble roll of film captured the essence of our summer. Except - these photos look a little empty without human subjects. If our summer was a play, then these images would be the backdrops.

Call for Submissions

Call for Submissions - Walk With Me Through Autumn zine
Hi!

I have an up-coming project that I'm very excited about. Last year, I tried my hand at making a personal zine - a sort of nostalgic love-letter to autumn. It taught me a lot and I had a great time compiling it. This year, I want to make a second volume, but this time including a diverse view of the season.

So I'm seeking submissions for the second volume of Walk With Me Through Autumn. This year's theme is Autumn Secrets. Looking for creative and nostalgic interpretations of this in:
  • Photography / photo stories
  • Art
  • Comics
  • Short prose with accompanying photo(s) or illustration(s)
  • Poetry
  • Childhood Halloween photo of yourself

Walk With Me Through Autumn will be a free digital zine. There is no compensation (for me or anyone else) - it’s just for fun! If your work is accepted, a short bio and link to your portfolio/blog will be published in the zine. Also, I'm not necessarily looking for photos of changing leaves and pumpkins (although I absolutely do welcome those - please send 'em in). If your autumn experience is closer to equator, or maybe doesn't look like the typical stock images of fall, I still want to hear from you. :-)

The release date will be around October 10, 2014.

Deadline for submissions:  ̶S̶e̶p̶t̶e̶m̶b̶e̶r̶ ̶5̶,̶ ̶2̶0̶1̶4̶.**** Submit via email to OctoberRebel [at] gmail [dot] com.

Many thanks!

****Edit April 15, 2015: Due to life happening, this zine will be pushed back to October, 2015. The Title has been changed to Flying Clubhouse Magazine. Submissions are open again until August 30, 2015. Submit via email to OctoberRebel [at] gmail [dot] com
